Anyone who has seen the cult sci-fi comedy classic Red Dwarf, which first aired on BBC2 on the 15th of February 1988 should get a real kick out of Red Dwarf: Infinity welcomes careful drivers.

The book, which was written by series co creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor under the name Grant Naylor, is split into three sections. The first section works as a great prequel for the show and a great introduction to both Dave Lister and Arnold Rimmer. The chapter introducing Rimmer into the story is a standout and shows just how smegged up he really is.

Sections two and three are basically a novelization of some episodes from the first and second season's. There are some small changers and a lot more detail, but the story is basically the same.

For those of you who have never seen the show, let me give you a quick ran down. A radiation leak kills everyone on board the mining ship Red Dwarf, except for Dave Lister who is in stasis due to being caught smuggling a cat onto the ship.

Fast forward three million years and the ships computer Holly releases Lister after the level of radiation is low enough to do so. He then informs Lister that the crew are dead and that he is, most likely the only human left alive in the universe.

To keep Lister Sane, Holly revives his bunk mate and superior officer Arnold J Rimmer. Rimmer is a self-centered, abject failure of a man who, while alive drove Lister crazy and after being revived in the form of a hologram continues in his smeghead ways.

They soon discover that the offspring of the cat named Frankenstein, who was pregnant when Lister smuggled her on board, have evolved into a humanoid species and one of them is still on the ship.

Like I have said, there are some small changers made in the book, but they by no means lessen the story in any way. I won’t go into what they are, but fans of the show will notice them right away.

All up, I recommend Infinity welcomes careful drivers to any fans of the show and would say that if you like sci-fi comedy, you could do much worse.

I give Infinity welcomes careful drivers four and a half out of five Star Bugs.
